Les modifications de pratique clinique liées à l’arrivée du séquençage haut débit dans le diagnostic génétique des maladies du développement

2018

Abstract Introduction The arrival of high-throughput sequencing (HTS) has led to a sweeping change in the diagnosis of developmental abnormalities (DA) with or without intellectual deficiency (ID). With the prospect of deploying these new technologies, two questions have been raised: the representations of HTS among geneticists and the costs incurred due to these analyses. Methods Geneticists attending a clinical genetics seminar were invited to complete a questionnaire. The statistical analysis was essentially descriptive and an analysis of costs was undertaken. Results Of those responding to the questionnaire, 48% had already prescribed exome analysis and 25% had already had the occasion …

Putting the “bio” in “biotherapeutics”/checkpoints for biosimilars/application of biosimilars

2016

Abstract / Executive summary The number of biosimilar medicines on the market is steadily increasing, due, in part, to patent expiration of several top-selling biologic medicines. These three e-learning modules discuss the basic concepts behind biosimilar medicines and highlight key regulatory considerations when using biosimilar medicines in medical practice.

Medicina animal en la Baja Edad Media hispánica y su relación con la medicina humana: aves, perros y caballos

2013

The high economic and social value of falcons, hounds and horses in the late Middle Ages led to the development of a specialized medical practice to keep them healthy and treat their diseases. A parallel production of technical works coded this medical knowledge, generating a specific doctrinal body. From the analysis of these treatises it is possible to fi nd close relationships with the current medical doctrine –galenism–, that go beyond the sharing of theories on humors and qualities. The importance of maintaining health and the conceptual instruments to achieve this aim, the precedence of diet as a therapeutic tool over drugs or surgery, treating by applying opposite, techniques of humo…

T cell assays and MIATA: the essential minimum for maximum impact.

2012

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA 94305, USA*Correspondence: cedrik.britten@tron-mainz.dehttp://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.immuni.2012.07.010The field of immunology has recentlyexperienced enormous advances fromwhich most have so far not been incorpo-rated into standard medical practice (Da-vis, 2008). One approach to fully exploitthe existing wealth of knowledge is toimplement a systematic strategy to eval-uate the immune system. The potentialbenefit of such an approach is that itmay lead to results that can be translatedinto the rational development of diagnos-tics and therapeutics (Hoos et al., 2011).Two prerequisites for its application ar…

Impact of recommendations on the initial therapy of Parkinson’s disease: A population-based study in France

2011

International audience; Levodopa induces long-term motor complications in Parkinson's disease (PD). Therapeutic strategies that prevent motor complications are needed. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of recommendations of a French consensus conference published in 2000 on initial PD therapy. We identified 308 PD patients as part of a population-based study performed within the Mutualité Sociale Agricole in five French districts (2007). Neurologists confirmed PD diagnosis. We compared initial therapy in 102 patients treated before 12/31/2000 to that of 206 patients treated afterwards. Initial treatment was in agreement with the recommendations if dopamine agonists were used in patients <6…

Mechanism of fatal air embolism after gastrointestinal endoscopy.

1998

Although venous air embolism is a known complication in medical practice in general, only a single case of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy complicated by venous air embolism with consecutive acute cardiovascular failure has so far been described in literature. Here we show that gastroscopy may be accompanied by massive, i.e. fatal venous air embolism. If a vessel in the gastrointestinal tract is exposed but does not collapse (in the case of a gastric ulcer, for example) air insufflated under pressure by the gastroscope may lead to a fatal air embolism. Our tests using a commercial gastroscope revealed that an overpressure of up to 43 kPa (kiloPascals) is reached without the rinsing functio…

A report on the development and prospects of Medical Psychology in the Federal Republic of Germany

1980

For eight years Medical Psychology has been an integral part of medical pre-examination as well as of research and teaching in the Federal Republic of Germany, and a great deal of psychological knowledge is taught to the medical student under this heading. Besides mere theory the medical student is supposed to acquire behavior based on psychological findings which will be important to him in medical practice. Nevertheless, students often complain that teaching is too far from reality, due to the fact that Medical Psychology is part of the first, more theoretical, period of medical eduction, even though one of the main objects of this new field is the analysis of the interaction between pati…
